Welcome to Sheep Mountain Alliance

SMA LogoSheep Mountain Alliance is a grassroots citizen organization dedicated to the preservation of the natural environment in the Telluride Region and Southwest Colorado. To this end, Sheep Mountain Alliance will provide education for and protection of regional ecosystems, wildlife habitats and watersheds.

In 1988 a group of concerned citizens worked together to stop a logging project just below timberline on majestic Sheep Mountain, south of Telluride, Colorado at Lizard Head Pass. Empowered by the effectiveness of their grassroots efforts and inspired by the environmental protection work needed in this fast growing region of Southwest Colorado, these activists joined together to form Sheep Mountain Alliance (SMA).

Since that time, SMA has worked continuously, diligently, and peacefully with individuals, groups, local landowners and public land managers as stewards of the fragile natural environment of our region.

Much of SMA's efforts in recent years have been consumed by the campaign to acquire, preserve and protect Telluride’s cherished Valley Floor. With the success of the acquisition effort, we are now focused on the management planning and placement of the conservation easement to protect the land in perpetuity.

In an effort to promote a thriving biodiversity with respect to quality of life for all people, animals and eco-systems, we invite you to join us in our quest for a balanced ecology.

SMA sends out action alerts and is in the process of updating our web site to be a interactive site for taking action on issues that effect our membership. We do not share our mailing list.

SMA is a federal non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization.
