The mining boom is back. Colorado has the third largest uranium reserve in the nation and there are over 33,000 active oil and gas wells with an active effort by public land agencies to lease public lands for exploration. In San Miguel County we have seen a 50% increase in the number of active wells since 2006 and the proposed Pine Ridge Uranium Mine is just west of Naturita in the Paradox Valley. The Colorado Oil & Gas Conservation Commission (COGCC) is taking comments on the latest draft of the new rules which were intended to create more environmental, wildlife and human health protections. PLASTIC BAG REDUCTION CAMPAIGN |
Sheep Mountain Alliance has partnered with The New Community Coalition to initiate a plastic bag reduction campaign in Telluride and Mountain Village. Our goal is to recreate how our community thinks about consumption, and it will start with promoting a European approach to shopping. Simply, to take a reusable shopping bag with you to do your shopping.

NORTHERN SAN JUAN MOUNTAIN WILDERNESS ACT |

Based on the recommendations from Mountain to Mesas, the citizen initiated GMUG forest planning process, Sheep Mountain Alliance (SMA) and Ridgway Ouray Community Council in partnership with the Colorado Wilderness Network presented a 100,000 acre Wilderness Proposal to Congressman John Salazar’s office this winter. With broad support from both counties, the Congressman has drafted the Northern San Juan Mountain Wilderness Act and we are eager awaiting its introduction. Some of the most spectacular yet vulnerable wild country left in the region would receive full statutory protection, helping to preserve our quality of life and quiet recreation opportunities. |
