I am grateful for the work Sheep Mountain Alliance does for our community

By Shai Kanow

Dear Editor,

I am mentoring with Ruthie Boyd and Mason Osgood from Sheep Mountain Alliance through the Telluride High School Mentorship program. I pursued this mentorship because I am interested in environmental law. I have learned about the newly updated GMUG Forest Plan and the local laws surrounding its policies. I have also learned about logging rules and local mining and cleanup procedures. Currently, we are working on learning about legislation advocacy and how to further protect the Dolores River canyons. This mentorship is fascinating as I’ve learned about the work done to protect the wilderness around my hometown and the wild lands we all love. It has given me a glimpse of what a nonprofit looks like working in environmental law and has inspired me to study something similar in college. I am very grateful for the work Sheep Mountain Alliance does for our community and the knowledge that they have shared with me. I am also very thankful to the Telluride High School Mentorship Program for allowing me to learn more about this subject. I recommend it to any students wanting to dive deeper into a particular field.

Thanks for working with us this semester, Shai!
