This September Sheep Mountain hosted our first Latinx community picnic. This is part of newest initiative to have events that are bilingual and meet the needs of a much broader demographic of the Telluride community.Telluride has a thriving immigrant and Latinx community, who are not represented in outdoor spaces. Trail signage is only in English and there can be a variety of system, economic and social barriers to getting outside. During our first event we had speakers: Erika Zavaleta, professor at UC Santa Cruz and advocate for seeing Latinx students get engaged in environmental studies and outdoor experiences, and Matt Zumstein, a local park ranger who spoke in Spanish about park services, forest fires and the best way to protect and use public landsWe started with a group hike, had food provided by La Cocina, Zumba taught by Marlen from Tri-county health, and lots of games for kids.Un gran exitó! Gracias a todos que vinieron y nos vemos la próxima vez!
